Hello, I’m Tom. I am a writer, and I have thoughts. You can read a bunch of my published work here. This is a place for pieces that don’t fit anywhere, pieces that I want to re-publish myself, and … stuff.

Why a newsletter?

I mean, I don’t know. Everyone else has one? Plus I got to make this cool banner, although I probably wouldn’t have gone to all the trouble of doing so had I realized that Substack only displays it at a tiny size anywhere that isn’t this page. Sigh.

Why “Impossible Colors”?

Because it’s a cool phrase and also a fascinating phenomenon. I like the idea of these colors existing outside the range of our vision. Yes, I know that color isn’t “real” and that it’s a function of our rods/cones/brain/etc. I still like the idea of colors that we can’t see. I find it romantic.

Why not “colours”?

Because I live in the USA at the moment, and I get the red squiggly underline every time I type something in Aus/UK spelling. And the red squiggly line is annoying.

Why subscribe?

Substack sez: “Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and publication archives!” So, yeah. Do it.

Just… why?

Look, if I knew that, I’d be on a Caribbean island somewhere.
